It certainly appears that meat free, plant based burgers are here to stay, and I’ve no issue with that.
They give vegetarians some additional options, are typically a bit less fat than their meat based siblings and tbh are often pretty tasty.
So with McDonald’s finally launching their McPlant it seemed only right to try it. I’ve eaten Burger Kings alternatives, Leon and of course plenty of home options.
My first impression was that the patty was designed to resemble meat, in look and texture. This was very similar to the Linda Macartny burgers.
They’re not particularly strong flavoured, there’s a corn / tofu vibe to the texture with a very slight oumami taste. Definitely not meat though.
This particular burger came with lettuce, onion, tomato, mayo, cheese and little mustard.
I’ll be honest the flavour was more like a Whopper but without the meat.
One benefit of meat free is that it doesn’t taste or feel fatty, even if nutritionally it actually isn’t that much better than a real burger.
Glad I tried but probably wouldn’t again.
